The right choice of electric fence

The right choice of the electric fencer - guides and tips

Which electric fence should be used depends on the electric supply, the animal species, the fence length and the vegetation of the fence system. We offer a huge selection of suitable electric fences for any situation.

When choosing the right electric fence some important things have to be considered. Depending on the application area and animal species, there are some serious differences between the devices.

At first a brief explanation of some terms:

  • Output voltage (Volt): Voltage of the device in idle speed
  • Voltage at 500 Ohm (Volt): Voltage at exposure (contact or vegetation), at physical contact the voltage shouldn't fall below 2.000 V and isn't allowed to exceed 10.000 V
  • Charging energy (Joule): Energy that is taken from the power source from the device
  • Impulse energy (Joule): Max. energy of the current pulse, corresponds to the impact force in the fence, the impulse energy is not allowed to exceed 5 Joule at physical contact
  • Power consumption (Watt or mA): Power that is taken from the mains/battery energizer of the power source
  • Theoretic fence length (CEE): Fence length at total freedom from interferences
  • Fence length without up to heavy vegetation: Fence length with different heavy vegetation

To make the right choice, the following 4 points should be cleared in advance:

1) Which kind of electric fence should be used?

230 V Mains energizers (mains operation)

+ Low operating costs
+ Especially energy-saving
+ Extremely powerful
+ Also usable for robust animal species, long fences and heavy vegetation
+ Safe installation on buildings, control possible from home
+ Permanent and reliable power source
- Risk at power failure
- Power supply necessary, not flexible/mobile

9 V Battery energizers (operation with battery)

+ Light and handy
+ Flexible in use
+ Solar operation possible
+ 12 V battery operation is possible
- Performance is limited by the battery, for animals that are easy to herd, short fences and little vegetation
- Theft danger
- High operating costs due to regular buying of batteries

12 V Rechargable battery energizers (operation with rechargable battery)

+ Flexible in use
+ Powerful
+ Also usable for robust animal species, long fences and heavy vegetation
+ Batteries can be recharged
+ Solar operation possible
- Theft danger
- Charging time of the battery

12 V Solar energizers (operation with solar panel or rechargable battery)

+ Eco-friendly
+ Flexible in use
+ Low operating costs
+ Long operation times
+ Self-loading rechargeable battery
- Theft danger
- With persistent bad weather a charging of the battery may be necessary
- Not powerful enough for long haired animals and long fences

2) Which animal species should be fenced in respectively excluded?

Depending on the animal species, the electric fence has to generate a different performance.

Especially important at this point is the voltage at 500 Ohm (correlates to the contact of an animal). "Animals that are easy to herd", like cattle, horses, pigs, dogs, cats and other domestic animals have short hair and are usually already adjusted to the electric fence. Therefore electric fences with little performance are sufficient - the minimum voltage at 500 Ohm has to be 2.000 V. Wild animals, bulls, goats, sheep or poultry are "animals that are difficult to herd", have a tight fur/coat and wild animals are often not used to electric fences. Therefore powerful devices with a minimum voltage of 4.000 V at 500 Ohm are necessary.

The impulse energy specifies the maximal energy that the electric fence emits. The higher the impulse energy, the higher the electric shock.

  • Electric fences with little impulse energy (up to 1 Joule): animals that are easy to herd, short fences, little vegetation
  • Electric fences with little impulse energy (up to approx. 5 Joule): animals that are difficult to herd, medium fences, normal to medium vegetation
  • Electric fences with little impulse energy (more than 5 Joule): animals that are difficult to herd, long fences, heavy vegetation

3) How long should the fence be?

The actual fence length plays an essential role in the choice of electric fence. Long electric fences (e.g. can only be operated with a powerful device).  At this point you should take special care about the suitable voltage and impulse energy (see above). The fence length refers to the single length of the fence and is only measured once - if fences with more levels are constructed, they are not summarized (pay attention to appropriate connection at regular intervals).

4) How strong is the vegetation?

The fence length can change due to vegetation like grass or bushes. The contact results in dissipations which can affect the power output. It should be ensured that as few plants as possible touch the conductor. By vegetation the fence loses voltage and therefore also safety.

With our selection of electric fences you will certainly find the suitable device for your needs.
